Picnic Tax vs 1-800Accountant: hire a CPA for this return, or buy a year of a virtual firm?
These are different products that get compared because both say “online accountant.”
1-800Accountant is a virtual accounting firm sold as an annual subscription. Public 2026 reviews describe plans billed annually, often in the $209 / $249 / $419 per month neighborhood (Tax Advisory, Core Accounting, Core Accounting+), which is roughly $2,500–$5,000+ per year before you add higher bookkeeping tiers. You are buying a year of access to their staff and, on higher plans, bookkeeping software or bookkeeping labor. Contracts and upfront annual billing are the main complaint pattern in independent reviews — read the current terms before you pay.
Picnic Tax is a marketplace. You complete a questionnaire, see a quote, and get matched with an independent U.S. CPA for a defined job: a personal return (from about $225–$250 + $50 per state), a small-business return (from about $750), or a planning session (from about $300). Picnic’s commission is paid by the CPA. Your payment is held until you accept the work. There is no Picnic annual membership required to file.
If you want one 1040 or one 1120-S done by a CPA, Picnic is usually the cheaper, more bounded purchase. If you want a branded firm on retainer for books, quarterly calls, and tax in one bundle, 1-800Accountant is built for that — at a much higher annual cost.
Who this is for
- LLC / S corp owners comparing a $750-and-up CPA filing to a $3,000-and-up annual plan.
- Freelancers who only need estimated-tax help and a year-end return, not monthly bookkeeping.
- Firms and operators who already have a bookkeeper and just need U.S. CPA tax prep.
Who this is not for
- Owners who explicitly want one vendor for cash-basis bookkeeping and tax, and who will use it every month. That is 1-800Accountant’s (or Bench/Pilot’s) category, not Picnic’s consumer product.
- Anyone hunting the cheapest DIY 1040. Neither company is that.
- Buyers who will not upload documents without MFA or a published SOC 2 report. Picnic’s FAQ describes TLS and AWS; College Investor 2026 flags no MFA. 1-800Accountant’s security claims should be read on their site, not assumed here.

| Picnic Tax | 1-800Accountant | |
|---|---|---|
| Model | Per-engagement marketplace of independent U.S. CPAs | Virtual firm; annual subscription, typically billed up front |
| Commitment | One job (return or planning). You can come back next year; you are not in a Picnic retainer | Annual contract is the default commercial motion in 2026 reviews |
| Personal tax | From about $225–$250 + $50/state + complexity | Individual 1040s are usually wrapped into a business plan, not sold as a $250 one-off. Confirm current SKUs (they have advertised freelancer-oriented plans) |
| Small business tax | From about $750 | Tax Advisory around $209/mo billed annually (~$2,500/yr); Core around $249/mo (~$3,000/yr); Core+ around $419/mo (~$5,000/yr). Bookkeeping volume can push this higher |
| Planning / estimated taxes | From about $300 as a standalone planning job | Included in the idea of the subscription; quality and response time vary by plan and staffing |
| Bookkeeping | Not Picnic’s consumer product | Core of the higher plans (software access vs full-service categorization — read the plan fine print) |
| Who you work with | Named independent CPA on Picnic’s platform; optional phone/Zoom | 1-800Accountant staff assigned to your account; not an independent-CPA marketplace |
| Payment protection | Paid at start via Stripe; not released until you accept the work. CPA pays Picnic’s commission | You pay the firm. Refund windows in reviews are often short (e.g. a 30-day unused-hours style policy). Read current terms |
| Overflow / firms | Picnic Enterprise: U.S.-based overflow for accounting and wealth firms | Not the comparison; 1-800Accountant sells to business owners, not as your firm’s overflow bench |
| College Investor 2026 | Recommends Picnic for complex filings; notes higher cost than DIY and no MFA | Not part of that review |
Rough math: one S corp return at Picnic’s $750 floor vs ~$2,500–$5,000 for a year of 1-800Accountant. If you would only call a CPA twice a year, the subscription is hard to justify. If you would otherwise pay a local CPA hourly every month, the subscription can be the better known number — provided you actually use it.

FAQs
Is Picnic a subscription?
No. You pay for a defined job. Small-business clients can use Picnic for quarterly support and year-end prep, but that is still quoted work, not a $209/month membership.
When is 1-800Accountant the better buy?
When you will use bookkeeping and tax questions every month and you want one vendor accountable for both. Add up a local bookkeeper + CPA and compare to the annual invoice. If the answer is “I just need the 1120-S filed,” Picnic is the more proportional spend.
Can Picnic do my books?
Picnic’s listed consumer services are personal tax filing, small-business tax filing, tax planning and advice, self-employed taxes, and equity compensation management. Bookkeeping is not on that list. Bring clean books (or your bookkeeper) to the tax engagement.
Do I get a dedicated CPA on Picnic?
Picnic selects an accountant from its network based on your questionnaire. You work with that person on the platform. Continuity next year is possible; ask. It is not a “your dedicated 1-800Accountant team” product.
How is Picnic paid?
Card via Stripe. Payment is collected when the job starts and held until you accept the work. The accountant, not you, pays Picnic’s commission.
What if I already signed a 1-800Accountant annual contract?
Picnic cannot unwind that contract. File with them for the paid year if that is the economical path, or read their cancellation/refund terms. Picnic is available for a future year or for a planning consult they do not cover.
