Picnic Tax vs TurboTax Live: software with an expert, or an independent CPA?
TurboTax Live is Intuit’s product: you still live inside TurboTax software, with a credentialed expert (often a CPA, EA, or tax attorney employed or contracted through Intuit) on chat, video, or full-service prep. Picnic Tax is not tax software you fill out. It is a marketplace that matches you with an independent U.S. CPA. You get a quote first, work with that person on Picnic’s platform (phone or Zoom if you want), and the accountant e-files after you sign off.
The College Investor’s 2026 review recommends Picnic Tax for complex filings. The same review is blunt about cost and login security: Picnic is far more expensive than DIY tax prep, and only one form of authentication is required.
If your return is a W-2, a standard deduction, and maybe one brokerage 1099, TurboTax Live (or even DIY TurboTax) is usually enough and costs less. If you have RSUs, several states, a side business, crypto, or you want a CPA you can reuse next year — not an Intuit queue — Picnic is the more direct product.
Who this is for
- Households deciding between “pay Intuit for an expert on my TurboTax file” and “hire an independent CPA online.”
- Tech employees with equity compensation, people with multi-state returns, and small-business owners who have outgrown interview-style software.
- Anyone who wants a quote before work starts and payment that is held until they accept the return.
Who this is not for
- Simple returns where free IRS tools or DIY TurboTax / Free Edition (where you qualify) will do. Picnic personal filing starts around $225–$250.
- People who want Intuit’s published accuracy or audit-support add-ons. Picnic does not advertise those Intuit guarantees.
- People who need MFA / a published SOC 2 report before uploading documents. College Investor 2026 flags Picnic’s single-factor login. Picnic’s FAQ describes TLS and AWS hosting only.
Honest comparison
TurboTax Live pricing is set by Intuit and changes by year and SKU (Live Assisted vs Live Full Service, plus state). Figures below are approximate 2026 public ranges — confirm on Intuit’s site. Picnic quotes are from Picnic’s FAQ, homepage, and the College Investor 2026 review.
| Picnic Tax | TurboTax Live | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Marketplace of independent U.S. CPAs | Intuit tax software with a credentialed expert attached |
| Who does the work | An independent CPA matched to your situation | An Intuit Live expert (CPA, EA, or tax attorney, depending on SKU). Full Service: the expert prepares and signs. Assisted: you still drive the software |
| Relationship | You work with the matched accountant on Picnic’s platform; College Investor notes you may be able to work with the same CPA across years | You get an expert in Intuit’s system. Continuity with the same person is not the product promise |
| Quote model | Questionnaire → locked quote before you proceed | SKU price by complexity (Easy, Deluxe, Premier, Self-Employed, etc.) plus state |
| Personal / individual starting price | About $225–$250 federal + $50 per state + complexity. College Investor: about $100 per extra service | Live Full Service public 2026 ranges often cited from about $89 on the simplest tier up to about $469 federal for Self-Employed, plus about $64 per state. Confirm current Intuit pricing |
| Small business entities | From about $750 (LLC / S corp / C corp filings as quoted) | TurboTax is built around Form 1040 (+ Schedule C). Entity returns (1120, 1120-S, 1065) are a different Intuit product line (e.g. ProConnect), not Live |
| Tax planning | From about $300 | Live is a filing product. Year-round planning is not the same as hiring a CPA for a planning engagement |
| Payment | Collected at start; held until you accept the work. CPA pays Picnic’s commission | Pay Intuit. No Picnic-style hold-until-acceptance |
| Equity / RSUs | Named service: equity compensation management (vesting, ordinary income vs capital gains, 83(b) where it applies, liquidity events, QSBS questions) | Premier / Self-Employed software can import brokerage and equity forms; the expert is still working inside TurboTax’s interview |
| Crypto / investments | Picnic planning copy includes crypto trading, stocks, dividends, rentals | Software + expert; high transaction counts still often need a CSV from Koinly/CoinTracker |
| Who e-files | Your Picnic accountant, after you sign off; EFIN required | Intuit / the Live expert, depending on SKU |
| Best fit | Complex personal, equity, multi-state, small-business, or “I want a CPA, not a software wizard” | Simple-to-moderate 1040s where you like TurboTax and want a human in the same UI |
Bottom line: TurboTax Live is cheaper and familiar for returns the software already handles well. Picnic costs more than DIY on purpose: you are hiring an independent CPA, not buying a software tier.

FAQs
Can Picnic replace TurboTax if I already started a return there?
Yes. You do not have to finish in TurboTax. Export or download your forms and documents, start Picnic’s questionnaire, and the matched CPA prepares the return. Say so in onboarding if you already paid Intuit — Picnic cannot refund Intuit’s fee.
Is Picnic cheaper than TurboTax Live Full Service?
Often no, for simple returns. Picnic personal filing starts around $225–$250 plus $50 per state. Intuit’s simplest Live Full Service tiers can start lower. For self-employed or Premier-level returns, the gap narrows. Get both numbers. College Investor 2026: Picnic is far more expensive than DIY and can be reasonable versus a traditional CPA.
Will I get the same CPA next year?
Picnic matches you with an independent accountant. College Investor 2026 lists “potential to work with the same CPA over multiple years” as a plus. It is not a written guarantee in Picnic’s FAQ. Ask at the end of this year’s engagement.
Does Picnic offer audit defense like some TurboTax SKUs?
Picnic’s public FAQ does not describe an Intuit-style audit defense product. The accountant prepares and e-files after you sign off. If audit representation matters, ask the matched CPA what they will and will not do, in writing, before you pay.
What about RSUs — isn’t that what TurboTax Premier is for?
Premier can import a 1099-B and show RSU income that already hit your W-2. Picnic’s equity compensation service is a CPA walking through vesting vs sale, supplemental withholding vs your real bracket, multi-state sourcing, and (where relevant) 83(b), ISOs, and liquidity events. Software interviews miss the planning questions.
How does payment work on Picnic?
You get a quote after onboarding. You pay by card via Stripe when the job starts. Picnic does not release that payment to the accountant until the work is completed to your satisfaction. The CPA pays Picnic’s cut.
This page is general information, not tax advice. Picnic Tax matches you with an independent U.S. CPA. Using this page does not create a client relationship. Competitor prices and SKUs change — confirm on Intuit’s site.
